New manager
Now that I've got your attention
A lot of people are calling for the head of Ruaidhri Higgins. A lot has been discussed on this forum about reasons why. So tell me your suggestions to replace him and how they can take this team forward.
You cant mention Higgins in your reply or why we failed etc etc... I just want to know who could take over the helm if and when he leaves...
n.b. Ruaidhri is still the Derry City manager and at the moment there are no plans to replace him. I just want to gauge who people think could come in

Re: New manager
I'll play and I won't say Ollie.
If he was interested and we were willing to buy him out of his contract, I would go for John Russell (if and when the time comes).

Kevin Doherty for me. Since the transfer window I think Drogheda have been very good.

Alan Reynolds - good coach, had us playing well, and his departure coincides with a drop in performances. Good recruitment and knowledge of the league

You seen Bohs lately?
Surely there's more managers out there than the 4 or 5 who always get mentioned around the LOI?
There's a huge football world out there. Does it have to be someone in the current LOI bubble? Let's think outside the box.

Re: New manager
Within the league my preference would be John Russell at Sligo. If he's interested & we're prepared to buy out his contract it's whether Sligo would do business unless their is a release clause that means they have to accept.
Outside of the league not really sure to be honest. Depends on how ambitious the club are & whether the new manager will be given the same timeframe as Higgins was to win the league & with Pats & Shels now in the equation that will be even more difficult to achieve.
Are there any managers in work in England or Scotland that would be interested if approached? Just thinking outside the box similar to Rovers when they brought Michael O'Neill in from Brechin City who were in Scotland's 3rd tier at the time

Re: New manager
I'm a strong advocate of having a local group of players at the Club but i'm less concerned about the origin of the Management Team. Bringing in Hegarty as No.2 was yet another lazy appointment.
What concerns me now is the pitch - any manager or player that is a serious professional should be looking at other options until we can resolve the playing surface issue.
Not a chance John Russell would come to us with a plastic pitch. Nor will Rennie walk out on Bohs. So we need to be realistic that we are not attracting the best managers available in the LOI. That will mean looking at Manager's keen for the opportunity or in the Irish league and keen for a fresh challenge.
So who, realistically, is available? Jon Daly, Kevin Doherty and Olli Horgan would see it as a big opportunity. Or maybe an IPL manager looking for a step up. The outcome of next week's Cup Final could be pivotal - if we're in Europe we could still entice someone half decent and if we are not then it's time to roll the dice.

Re: New manager
Greengo, do you have any insight into how managerial appointments work at the club? My guess is that POD and the board take advice from ex-players.
If the club was set up as a professional outfit off the field we would have a DoF in place (is this now McCrystals role?) who would have identified a list of managers on an on-going basis. That list should be made up of people who play a style that the club wants to carry out.
Going off recommendations and personalities leads a team jumping from one style to another meaning that players brought in under one manager may not suit another.
Managers I don't want to see: Horgan/Caulfield/Jeffrey.
I'd probably give Stephen O'Donnell a go. Did a good job with Pats, got handed a terrible situation by Dundalk at the start of this year. Tries to play a decent style of football.
Mark Kennedy is available, previously of Lincoln and Swindon.
Ian Murray, formly of Airdrieonians who he took to the League one playoff final twice, then took over at Raith Rovers, leading them to 2nd in the championship.

Re: New manager
McCrystal's role changed during the year. He was original a Development and Pathways Manager but now he is a Technical Director taking on the responsibilities Paddy McCourt's role took care of. So recruitment strategies and the new education programme that launched around September fall under his remit.

Re: New manager
Mark Kennedy is a name I had in my head too, he was apparently interested in the Dundalk job before Noel King got it. People will point to the fact he's just recently been sacked by Swindon but Paul Cook was sacked by Southport before he was appointed by Sligo & that didn't turn out too badly for Sligo or Paul Cook himself.Nige92 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 11:30 am Greengo, do you have any insight into how managerial appointments work at the club? Also I totally agree on the point you make about the club needing to identify a style of play they would like & recruiting a manager & players to suit

Re: New manager
Most managers have a sacking in their CV, so if someone being sacked rules them out, you are going to have a very short list.

Re: New manager
I agree. The point I was trying to make is that some people tend to take the approach "he could hardly do it with (insert team name) why are we going for him".Keyser Soze wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 1:11 pm Most managers have a sacking in their CV, so if someone being sacked rules them out, you are going to have a very short list.
Also should've noted that Stephen Kenny was sacked by Bohs weeks before we appointed him & he turned out alright for us

Stephen O'Donnell within the league. They'll be a few outside it even no2's at league clubs that will apply.
