The Media.

Post by brandyball »

Having listened to a couple of " tetchy" exchanges on Radio Foyle between Ruidhri Higgins and Dessie McCallion and laterally Gareth McGlynn with Dessie.

Ruidhri was making the point of the negativity of Dessie and Gareth made same point however Dessie countered with it wasn't the Media that Booed the team off however Gareth stated, incorrectly, the team were only booed off at half time against Sligo and not full time and Dessie put him right that they were Booed at full time also.

Genuine question, are the ex players analysers, Co commentators or whatever you wish to call them, are they considered part of the " Media"?

In terms of Gareth, no he would not be classified as "media". He is a pundit who offers authoritative opinions on a specific topic (football) and other than his column with the Derry News he is not contracted to a media organisation, such as the BBC. This is a freelance position that is paid by appearance.

Not sure he'll get another Gig on Radio Foyle ;)

I don't listen to much Radio Foyle and I'm going back a bit here (and it's just one example), but they have been overly negative of the team before. It was the 1st leg (at home) of the Euro game against Dinamo Minsk. After Dinamo scored their second to make it 2-0, Eric White declared Derry's European odyssey "over for another year". When you consider that they scored in the 60th minute or something, a whole half-hour and a 2nd leg left to play, I found that very negative and pessimistic at the time. Haven't listened to him since (I hold grudges :D ).

Anyone working in the Media is the Media. Some in the Media like to play a passive, overly friendly role whilst others will be more inclined to critique what's actually happening.

End of the day you want your Media to ask the difficult questions. I know i do. It's the only way to shift focus away from the generic answers. Managers often react to any difficult question as if its direct personal criticism and then they go all defensive.

Journalists and commentators should be confident in their role and not afraid, or pressured into, asking only favourable questions. Too many fall into this trap and end up just giving the manager an open platform.

That was my thinking and couldn't understand Gareth calling the Media negative if he's part of the Media team. If he was there to give his opinions on the game/ performance but then opinioned on the interviewers questioning. Gareth also thought the Dundalk game was the more important of the 3 remaining games(?). Strange one.

You'd be surprised. The fact you are still chatting about it nearly a week later shows the impression he left on the overall programme. Dessie is a big man and he can take the back and forth whilst recognising that Gareth's impact in LOI coverage this season has resulted in him being one of the most sought after pundits for coverage this year. He started on Drive 105 years ago, did bits on LOITV but now he is getting paid jobs with RTE, Virgin Media and Off The Ball (I think that is paid).

I think Gareth is decent to listen to, a good pundit.

Agree. He brings a great energy and knowledge to the conversation.

Media is a very wide group - commentators, journalists, etc etc - all working in the same environment but with different perspectives.

Didn't say he wasn't but him talking about negativity of the Media and stating the Team weren't booed off at the final whistle against Sligio was factually incorrect.
