Happy to be proven wrong, but I can't see us going to a grass pitch again, for a number of reasons. The council won't like it from the perspective of both reduced income and increased maintenance costs.

But probably more importantly. I'm no gardener, but with the LOI season ending in November and starting again in February - plus team training on any surface needed to resume presumably from January onwards - I just don't see a window there to install a grass pitch in our winter weather and have it bed-in properly? Maybe someone who understands horticulture could comment.

I could see the council and club opting for a new and better artifical pitch in a year or two as a compromise option for both sides. Apparently POD and the players were impressed with the pitch at Torshavn. It was also installed properly, with in-built sprinklers etc.

Croke park has a seventy acre farm in Naul North Dublin they grow their own grass there transfer it from there in rolls obviously they have a machine to lift it another machine to lay it they can cover croke park playing surface in maxium week.Playing on it the next week no bother.

The smart thing would be to utilise the pitch next door at the dog track. But there's lots of issues, logistical and political, and its too late to open that can of worms just now.

On Radio Foyle that the Council have brought in specialists to review the current playing surface who will then report back to the Council..

Good chance they'll say it needs a system of watering to help it work effectively. Which apparently the council removed from the original plans to save money.

From a Derry Journal article earlier in the year. “The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) recently advised Derry City that the 3G pitch at the stadium is 'unlikely to be fit for elite level soccer beyond the 2023 season’.”

That to me reads no European football on the pitch as it is in 2024. So has the ball started rolling?……

That reads to me that the FAI think there is a possibility of it not being deemed fit for next season. But that also means a posibility that it IS. There is nothing defnitive in that statement, and it wil be UEFA who will decide.

There is no way at this stage that the currennt pitch will be replaced for the start of next season. There just isn't the time (nor the funding).

When do instute plan to leave? Cause if their using it, how can the pitch ever be changed anyways

Institute are working on their own stadium plans but they are still many years away.

Has the construction of the new stand begun does anyone know?

Interesting post from Scotland, especially the part on not seeing a good game played on a plastic pitch .... The sooner it goes the better . If stute get promotion, unfortunately that might further delay the change to grass .

It also goes on to say...

Which if we're being honest would reflect the standard of LOI generally.
