I heard Tiernan Lynch is calling the new stand 'The Kop' as well.

I suspect the name wont be long sticking when people realise that it derives from Britain's military history. You may as well call it the Waterloo stand :D

I'd be more concerned with the "Anfield" connection TBH. A caller ro Radio Foyle suggested naming it after Ryan and revert the Stadium name to " The Brandywell "

There are a few kops around at English grounds (I don't think anywhere outside England uses it?), but Anfield was the first,

I'd get on board with that Radio Foyle caller's proposal personally, but can't see it happening anytime soon. That ship has sailed, and it would only reopen what proved to be quite a divisive episode for supporters.

The stand should be named after the lad who paid for it.

Given the history of the Derry Walls, I doubt the history of Spion Kop will carry too much indignation from the average Derry supporter.

As someone already said the new stand should be called after the man who paid for it if he agrees We owe POD a lot.

I wouldn’t even be asking his permission as he most probably wouldn’t agree.

Ahh here - the Derry Walls have long since lost any sense of belonging to one or other community locally. Sure they're even in our club badge, as designed by supporters. There hasn't been any issue with the Walls themselves in my lifetime, & I'm no spring chicken :D

The 'kop' name comes from a famous British Army battle during the Boer War. Surely we can come up with something better/more relevant for our excellent new stand? Kop stands are meant to be steep anyway, so it doesn't even work. We can do better

I think Tiernan was trying to liken the North Stand to the Kop rather than naming it after it as in that it could have the same affect for us at the Brandywell as the Kop has done for Liverpool down the years in crucial matches at Anfield by creating an atmosphere that the opponents eventually wilt under

I don't need an education on Spion Kop and it's relevance in the Boer War, but cheers for that anyway.

I think the Apprentice Boys would disagree with your analysis of the current day significance of the Derry walls.

And the fact the walls are incorporated on the club badge perhaps indicates how Derry supporters place less emphasis on the British military significance of the walls... in the same way that they would not reference the British in the Boer war with a football stand being refered to as the Kop. Surely we can be better than making these type of connections with the football club.

Yes to changing the stadium name. No to the kop. Seriously.

Any details on site showing access to new stand?

Not sure if you're on facebook or not but there is a link below with a video showing all the new access points around the stadium.

Jeez lad - you're being very precious here. This is a public forum, where posts get read by multiple people. You may be a Professor of the Boer War, but not everyone else is - so it made sense to clarify what the issue was for all readers rather than talk about something indirectly/mysteriously. Apologies if that put your nose out of joint.
IfYouTolerateThis wrote: Fri Apr 04, 2025 9:02 am I think the Apprentice Boys would disagree with your analysis of the current day significance of the Derry walls.
I made no mention of the significance of the walls to anyone. Just that they're not seen as belonging to one or other community here. Which is just a straightforward statement of fact.

Aye - let's pretend that there is no issue at all with anything that has a military connection etc in this town :?:

I'll make a firm prediction that that stand will not be getting referred to as 'The Kop' by City supporters. The Jungle idea mentioned above is a good alternative name in my view, with a nod to the stadium's past. I just can't see the Kop name sticking, and as someone else posted - it was probably more TL describing how he'd like the stand to function for the club.

Anyways - everyone knows that there's no kops in the Brandywell on matchdays...... :P

First, talk of a KOP and tonight we will receive a certificate declaring the ground a "Peace Pitch" twinning the Brandywell with Flanders Peace Pitch. Are we becoming a British Army team?
