Again, would much prefer showgrounds to be the artificial pitch and grass for the Brandywell. Not sure how much demand council are actually expecting for Brandywell that a grass pitch couldn't cope with.

Unfortunately public bodies are obsessed with the nonsense that gets sold to them by the people who sell these pitches and will only give funding for them.

I think its more to to with the fact there is less likelihood of upkeep needed on a plastic surface other than rolling it now and again, and it can be rented out to public use like Creggan, Magee etc...

I believe the 3G pitch had to be installed as part of the funding process. It can be utilised by the community. There would be no funding for a stadium if the community could not get use out of it.

I Hate Plastic pitchs and I know that I am not the only one. Not real football, no more Ryan McBride sliding tackles for example. This is the only negative coming from the development.

Exactly. Precisely the type of guff that holds sway now with public bodies. Apparently it will be open "24/7". Do they expect the Brandywell to be rented out at 3am on a Tuesday morn? The financial/community benefits are in my opinion overstated by the people who make money from installing these pitches.

The 3g pitch will have to be entirely replaced in less than ten years anyway.

I think your being a little unfair on this issue. Theres money to be made and thats why the 3G pitch is going down. If you rent half the pitch at a cost of £50 per hour, at 4 times a day Monday to Friday, thats a total of £1600 per week income to the council.

Onviously any day we are playing thats a days bookings lost but it could still be used on a Saturday and Sunday for bookings from the public

Thats £77k a year, that could pay 4 wages for 2 groundsmen and 2 people to manage the bookings used throughout the week. Thats me also just taking into consideration the half pitches only being used 4 times per night 5 times a week.

On the issue of the pitch being used purely in a footballing sense as would I rather have 3G or grass, i'd have grass every day of the week. The problem is we dont own the stadium, and if the public can benefit from using this and making the council money, they are going to do it

Plastic pitches wear down too through time and use, so if it was to be used a lot when Derry aren't using it, it will not be in prime condition in the future.

For whatever reason the grass pitch has been in an awful state for the start of each recent season. Not sure why that is. But once people point out how crap it is, the council usually step in. Did we win pitch of the year once a few years ago? Other non-club owned pitches such as turners cross, terryland or tallaght which get used for other games as well don't seem to have that problem.
